Pope John Paul II was elected Pope on October 16, 1978, after the death of Pope John Paul I who was only 32 days in office. He was officially installed as the 264th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on October 22, 1978 (when he was 58). He had been the only non-Italian Pope after Dutch Pope Adrian VI in the 1520s and historically the only Polish Pope. He was born in Wadowice, Poland on May 18, 1920 as Karol Jozef Wojtyla. One of the great popes of all times, a polish pope known as John Paul II whose real name is “Karol Józef Wojtyła”, was born on May 18, 1920 in the Polish town of Wadowice, a small city 50 kilometers from Krakow.
